This activity comes under the joint campaign ” Women and girls: safe at home, online, in the street, at work and in society as a whole”. This campaign comprises a combined effort involving 85 national and international partners, including the EU, gathered in solidarity to mark the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.

These days are observed worldwide each year from 25 November, which marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

Violence against women and girls is also a violation of a fundamental human right and a result of gender inequality and gender-based discrimination. The European Union and its Member States are committed to fight gender-based violence. Every year, we choose a symbolic location in Palestine to light in orange. This year, we have chosen to light the separation barrier in Bethlehem. Many other locations across the world are glowing in orange at the same time, showing that our message is strong and clear: Violence has no excuse. Our voices must remain loud and unified to empower Palestinian women in their homes, work places, and society at a whole,” said EU Deputy EU Representative Maria Velasco at the occasion. Women and girls are in a vulnerable situation in Palestine.
