The EU has welcomed the new law passed by the Algerian Parliament criminalising all forms of aggression, including verbal or psychological against women, describing it as “a real breakthrough for the women of this country.”
The new law introduced a series of provisions and provides for heavier sentences with the aim of ensuring women’s rights, including in cases of family abandonment and sexual harassment.
“The reform of the Algerian criminal law is an achievement that can strengthen the national system to fight violence against women. It provides an encouraging example for other countries in the region,” said an EU spokesperson. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
