Unfortunately, this year Eid comes at a time of war for the people of Tripoli and suffering for many others in Libya, particularly in the south of the country. I appeal to all those exercising leadership to respect the spirit of Eid al-Fitr and allow the observance of this sacred holiday in peace, reconciliation and compassion.
I also hope that they reflect on the bloodshed, destruction and displacement that Tripoli has witnessed over the last two months, and put the interests of the people of Libya first, by ending the violence, be guided by reason and return to dialogue. This is the only way to resolve the ongoing conflict, and to resume a process of reconciliation indispensable for peace, stability, and prosperity in Libya. After over eight years of turmoil following the February revolution which promised so much the people of Libya deserve no less.
