The Chairman of the Presidency Council and Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord of Libya, Fayez Mustafa al-Sarraj held meetings today in Brussels with the President of the European Council Donald Tusk, the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and the EU High Representative for foreign affairs and security policy Federica Mogherini, ahead of the EU informal Summit to take place in Malta on Friday, where EU leaders will discuss EU support to Libya.

“Let me say that the EU is fully behind the efforts of the Libyan people to find an inclusive political settlement, and the United Nations efforts to that end. I reiterated the EU’s support for the Presidency Council and the Government of National Accord in implementing the Libyan Political Agreement. What is needed now is further outreach in a constructive manner to those in Libya who have not yet rallied around the new institutions,” President Tusk told the Libyan PM.

EU High Representative Federica Mogherini said in her remarks following the meeting: “The Prime Minister and myself discussed more at length the ways in which the European Union can support his work to unite the country, to overcome this long and difficult time that Libya has been living and to make sure that the enormous Libyan potential can be turned at the benefit at the Libyans,” adding: “The European Union is, has been and will continue to be – I hope that even more than in the past – united at your side in this difficult task. We understand perfectly well the challenges, you know you can count on us to face them in the most useful, wise and productive manner for the Libyans.”
