The EU Head of Delegation to Lebanon has congratulated the Lebanese President for the recent successful military operation around Arsal and the work of the Lebanese armed forces in keeping security in the face of extremist groups.
Ambassador Christina Lassen met President Michel Aoun on Friday 15 September, and expressed her appreciation of the determination of the Lebanese Armed Forces and the security agencies in maintaining the stability and security of Lebanon. She also extended her condolences for the killing of Lebanese soldiers who, in the recent operations and since 2014, have lost their lives defending the Lebanese eastern border against extremist groups.
Ambassador Lassen reiterated the European Union’s full support to the armed forces’ mission in fighting terrorism and to secure Lebanon’s borders.
The EU Ambassador discussed with President Aoun the consequences of the Syrian crisis and reiterated the EU’s support for both host communities and Syrian refugees in Lebanon. On the return of refugees to Syria, she noted that “the EU views that conditions for refugees to return from Lebanon to Syria in safety, dignity and in line with international law are not yet in place.”
