EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini is on a visit to Lebanon, where she met with President Michel Aoun, Prime Minister Saad Hariri, Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil as well as Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri.

These meetings aim to enhance the long-standing partnership between the European Union and Lebanon and to support Lebanon’s institutions during this important period for Lebanon’s democracy, as well as to exchange views on the current regional challenges facing both Europe and Lebanon, particularly the conflict in Syria, security, counter-terrorism and refugees.

In the margins of the meetings, the High Representative met with students from the Bar Elias School (Beka’a valley) and donated the amount of the Bonn International Prize for Democracy (€10,000) that she received in 2016 to the school, in acknowledgement of the generosity of Lebanon in hosting Syrian refugees as well as of the dedication of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in guaranteeing all children with access to education.
