Some twenty young women and men representing 16 NGOs active in the Mount Lebanon area took part in the NET-MED Youth World Café held by the EU-funded project in Beirut to discuss the objectives and implementation strategies of the NET-MED Youth project, and to share their expectations, needs and concerns when working with and for youth.

Participants, divided in four teams, agreed that through NET-MED Youth activities they could further promote active youth engagement and participation in civic life, which in turn would encourage the creation of local action projects within their communities. In more concrete terms, participants discussed how creating sports and arts centres, for instance, would help build important life skills for youth, such as tolerance and inclusive citizenship, and would promote well-being and positive social interactions.

Participants of the World Café agreed on appointing a regional focal point to coordinate all actions, creating regional working groups and organising thematic workshops for youth, particularly on youth participation and empowerment, and media literacy.

More encounters like this will follow, in Akkar, Tripoli, South-Lebanon and Bekaa, between July and December 2016, leading to a national conference.

NET-MED Youth aims to improve the access and effective participation of young people in mainstreaming their priorities into legislation and national planning in the Southern Mediterranean Partner countries. Specifically, it aims to build the capacities of youth organisations in ENP South countries and to enhance networking among them in order to reduce the fragmentation of efforts and harness the collective potential of young people in achieving democratic transition towards active citizenship, political participation and social inclusion.
