Algeria: launch of the programme ‘Participatory Democracy and Local Development’ in the municipality of Djemila in Sétif

The programme for strengthening local development actors (CapDEL), funded by the Algerian Government, through the Ministry of the Interior and Local Government-Algeria, the European Union in Algeria and implemented by the United Nations Programme for the Development (UNDP) was launched on 26 February in Setif-Djemila, selected among the 10 constituencies of its kind across the national territory, for the implementation of this programme.

The launching workshop was an opportunity to present to the local actors of Djemila the objectives of this project; to introduce partners and the project’s implementation plan; to identify synergies and bridges with other projects at the level of the Municipality of Djemila and to identify the resource persons within the Municipality to be involved in the project.

The next Municipality where this project will be launched is Messad (Wilaya of Djelfa).

The 10 municipalities where the project will be implemented have been selected according to criteria of typology and geography as well as demographic, cultural, social, economic and ecological specificities before the project is expanded at the national level. The municipalities are: Ghazaouet (Tlemcen); Ouel Ben Abdelkader (Chlef); Tigzirt (Tizi Ouzou); Timimoun (Adrar); Djanet (Illizi); Djemila (Setif); El Khroub (Constantine); Beni Maaouche (Bejaia); Babar (Khenchla); Messaad (Djelfa).

The aim of this project is to involve citizen in local development, to modernise the public administrative service, to strengthen the local economy with a view to creating jobs and sustainable income and disaster management through innovative and participatory approaches.
