Upon the invitation of the Higher Independent Body for the Elections (ISIE), the EU will deploy an election observation mission to Tunisia for the presidential and legislative elections to take place respectively on 15 September and 6 October.

This decision is in line with the support policy of the EU to the democratic consolidation initiated in Tunisia since 2011.

Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/ Vice- President of the European Commission, has appointed Fabio Massimo Castaldo, Member of the European Parliament, as Chief Observer.

A team of 10 electoral analysts will be based in Tunis starting from 23 August. They will be joined on 2 September by 28 long-term observers who will be deployed throughout the country and 28 short-term observers will reinforce the device during the different electoral days.

The mandate of the mission is to observe and analyse the whole electoral process in order to conduct an impartial, neutral and objective assessment. At the outcome of the vote, the Mission will present its preliminary conclusions on the electoral process. A detailed analytical report will be published afterwards. This report will also include recommendations in view of the forthcoming elections.
