The European Union is in mourning at the side of Tunisia, our partner, friend and neighbour in the Mediterranean.

Throughout the years, President Beji Caid Essebsi has been a courageous and respected key player of the Tunisian democratic life, convinced of the importance of a close partnership with the European Union. With his death, Tunisia has lost one of its more competent and persistent leader in the building of a democratic and prosperous Tunisia, able to offer a better future to its people and a model for the region.

Our thoughts and condolences go to his family as well as to the entire Tunisian population. The European Union reaffirms its confidence in the Tunisian democracy based on the principles of the Constitution of 2014, and remains more than ever supportive of Tunisia. It is determined to reinforce the privileged partnership that unites us. The privileged partnership EU-Tunisia for Youth, that President Essebsi and I have jointly created, remains a top priority for the Union.
